Taste of Autumn

Walking the Labyrinth

This summer’s Labyrinth walk was so successful that we are repeating it this fall. The labyrinth is an ancient feminine spiritual tool that integrates mind, body and spirit. Walking a labyrinth opens us to our inner wisdom; to the divine within. The North Shore is fortunate to have a permanent, outdoor Labyrinth at St. Elizabeth’s in Glencoe, as well as a facilitator, Debbie McGowan, who has led hundreds of labyrinth walks in the Chicago area. Join us at St. Elizabeth’s at 1:00. After a brief talk by Debbie, we will walk the outdoor labyrinth and then come back together to process what we have learned. Bring a journal, if you’d like.
Thurs., Oct. 14. 1:00-2:30 p.m. $13

Leadership and Resilience

The social roles open to women have widened dramatically in the last fifty years, but we still have to cope with stereotypes. We need to celebrate how much things have changed, but recognize how far there is yet to go. These books help. Asking for It

Do we--can we?--ask for what we want, or need, or honestly deserve? Or do we wait quietly for someone to notice and reward us? Unnerving research documents how seldom we ask, or ask for enough, and how that adds up over time. Fortunately there are effective ways to step outside this trap--without becoming bitches or putting important relationships at risk. Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever, Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide.

SURPRISE! ISSUES I NEVER BARGAINED FOR

Help! I’m NEVER Home Alone

You can either tear your hair out and cry, or learn to be philosophical and laugh about it. With Mary Roberts, LCSW, and others in similar situations, come and problem solve. There are no clear answers, but like Joan Rivers, Mary says….”Let’s Talk!”

Who, Me? A Grandmother?

Let’s face it. Being a grandmother today is different than it was for our mothers – just ask your children! Today’s grandmothers can be found in the boardroom, the schoolroom, on the school board, the tennis court, on the village caucus, or in a myriad of volunteer activities. Your family’s expectations of you as grandmother, and even your own, may be different than those you anticipated. Come and explore together the "pain and pleasure" of this timeless role.
Joann Larson is a retired nurse and counselor currently volunteering in several women's organizations, and grandmother to six delightful grandchildren.
